Crowe's identinet project consists of a series of downloadable 'avatars'
(rudimentary 2D representations of human figures that chat room
users can select as their virtual stand-ins in the chat room environment).
Until now, the range of options has traditionally been limited
shiny, happy cartoon people who all look like or Barbie or Britney,
or garish computer-graphic figures. Crowe's additions to this cast
of contemporary archetypes are drawn from his own urban environment
in Manchester the disarming realism and gritty universality
of his characters offering an amusing alternative to the available
repertoire of mainstream fantasy icons.
